Donatella Versace's protge, Christopher Kane, sat by Manolo Blahnik at the London College of Fashion last night to hear the first lady of Italian fashion declare to a stunned audience I am working with young designers and yes, I am looking for The One to take over the Versace brand. The admission temporarily floored her interviewer for the evening, Colin McDowell, who had arranged the talk which was attended by members of the public, as well as the press for the Sunday Times' Style magazine. Christopher is my favourite designer," Donatella, wearing a chic monochrome coat for the event, went on. He and Tammy remind me so much of me and Gianni brother and sister, working together. She spoke of the "petrifying" pressures of taking the reins at the label after her beloved elder brother was killed ten years ago, but was relaxed and playful in conversation; chick here when McDowell asked whether she preferred working on womenswear or menswear, she quipped, Well, I like looking at men! But if there is one thing Donatella feels confident she can do, it is design clothes for women. My DNA is Versace, but my sensibilities are a woman's, she said, referencing Gianni's outrageously sexy designs. And you know, our sense of sexy has evolved over time. When Gianni was designing in the Eighties, being glamorous was about wearing dresses that were short and tight and colourful and decorative; now, that just looks trashy. Now it's all about mystery, about not revealing too much." Yet despite confessing the creative aspect of her job is the one she loves most, the future of the house of Versace is clearly at the forefront of Donatella's mind. As well as her quest for fresh blood, the label is on the verge of expanding into new markets China and India and increasing its presence on the Internet; Isabel Marant the designer admitted it would probably be selling its clothing lines online within the next few years. She also spoke of her dissatisfaction with the show season merry-go-round, saying she was thinking about new, better" ways to present her collections. She may be considering a Versace without her at the helm, but it's clear she still feels she has a lot to achieve before she steps down. I am passionate about my work, she insisted. People see me in photos at parties and they think that's my life, but it's not. I'm a working woman I get up and I go to the office. Fashion isn't all about glamour. It's a balancing act.
